Abengoa Solar S.A., previously known as Solúcar Energía, is a global leader in the development, design, financing, construction, and operation of large-scale solar power facilities. Headquartered in Sanlúcar la Mayor near Seville, Spain—with operations extending globally—Abengoa Solar has been at the forefront of innovation in concentrated solar power (CSP), photovoltaic (PV), and concentrated photovoltaic technologies. The company is renowned for pioneering projects such as Europe’s first commercially operating CSP tower plant—the PS10—and major international ventures like the Solana Generating Station in Arizona, USA.
Historically part of Abengoa S.A., Abengoa Solar invested heavily in R&D with over €150 million allocated since 2007 to advance proprietary CSP and PV technologies; this resulted in more than 115 patent applications by 2012. Their expertise spans both parabolic troughs and central receiver towers with thermal storage capabilities that allow electricity generation even after sunset—a key feature demonstrated at plants like Solana.
In January 2023, due to financial restructuring within its parent group following significant debt challenges faced by Abengoa S.A., Abengoa Solar was acquired by Rioglass Solar Holding.
