Cogentrix Energy, LLC

Cogentrix Energy is a leading independent power producer headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 1983 by George T. Lewis Jr., the company has developed a reputation for quality within the independent power generation market through its focus on efficient operations and disciplined management practices. Over its history, Cogentrix has developed or acquired more than 5 GW of generating capacity across various fuel types—including coal-fired plants as well as renewable energy projects such as utility-scale solar installations. Notably acquired by Goldman Sachs in 2003, Cogentrix continues to expand its portfolio with an emphasis on renewable energy solutions.
The company’s expertise spans all aspects of power asset lifecycle management: from initial development through construction to ongoing operation and technical optimization. Its portfolio includes both fossil-fuel-based facilities and significant investments in renewable technologies—particularly large-scale photovoltaic projects like the Alamosa Solar Generating Project in Colorado (30 MW), which was among the largest concentrating PV installations globally at completion. With over $362 million annual revenue reported recently and more than 300 employees, Cogentrix remains committed to supporting North America’s transition toward cleaner energy while maintaining industry-leading safety records.
