El Paso Electric Company

El Paso Electric Company (EPE) is a regional electric utility headquartered in El Paso, Texas. Founded in 1901 as the El Paso Electric Railway Company providing streetcar transportation via mule-drawn cars—and later electric streetcars—the company shifted its core business by 1925 to generating and distributing electricity across west Texas and southern New Mexico. Today EPE serves approximately 460,000 customers over a 10,000-square-mile territory that includes major cities like El Paso (TX) and Las Cruces (NM).
EPE operates as a vertically integrated monopoly utility regulated by state authorities. Its energy portfolio includes nuclear fuel, natural gas, purchased power agreements with wind/solar providers, as well as ownership stakes or contracts with large-scale renewable projects such as the Macho Springs Solar Facility (50 MW), PSEG El Paso Solar Energy Center (10 MW), Buena Vista Solar Farm (120 MW), among others. The company has been expanding its renewable generation capacity—especially through community-scale solar farms—and integrating battery storage solutions at some sites.
In addition to supplying reliable grid power—including clean energy options—EPE promotes energy efficiency through builder partnerships for ENERGY STAR® homes, supports EV charging infrastructure development, runs community solar subscription programs, and continues investing in modernizing its grid while minimizing environmental impact.
As of 2020 EPE became privately owned by Infrastructure Investments Fund associated with J.P. Morgan after previously being publicly traded on NYSE under ticker EE.
