Imperial Irrigation District (IID), established in 1911 and headquartered in Imperial, California, is a public agency serving the Imperial Valley and much of the Coachella Valley. IID’s dual mission is to provide reliable water delivery for agricultural, municipal, and industrial users while also supplying electric power to over 159,000 customers across a 6,611-square-mile service area. IID manages more than 5,000 miles of electrical distribution lines and controls over 1,100 MW of energy from a diverse portfolio that includes locally generated geothermal and hydro resources as well as solar—most notably through one of the nation’s largest low-income community solar projects launched with Citizens Energy.
This landmark project features approximately 107,000 solar panels on IID-owned land near Calipatria; it generates up to 30 MW under a long-term purchase agreement designed to reduce bills for qualifying low-income residents via IID’s Residential Energy Assistance Program (REAP) and eGreen Program. As one of only eight balancing authorities in California—and an active participant in regional water conservation agreements—IID plays a critical role both as an affordable utility provider and as an innovator advancing renewable energy adoption within its territory.
