LDK Solar Co., Ltd. is a leading global manufacturer in the photovoltaics industry specializing in vertically integrated production across the entire value chain—from raw materials to finished PV modules. Founded in 2005 with headquarters in Xinyu City, Jiangxi Province, China, LDK Solar rapidly became one of the world’s largest producers of mono- and polycrystalline silicon wafers—critical components for manufacturing solar cells. The company expanded its operations to include upstream polysilicon production as well as downstream manufacturing of ingots, blocks, cells, modules, and even full-scale PV power plant development.
At its peak capacity around 2010–2013, LDK operated some of Asia’s largest polysilicon plants with annual capacities exceeding 25–55 thousand metric tons; it also maintained over 4 GW wafer capacity and more than 3 GW module manufacturing capability. Its products were supplied globally to major module manufacturers as well as directly into utility-scale projects across China, Europe, and North America.
Despite rapid growth fueled by vertical integration—enabling cost reductions through control over each stage—LDK faced financial difficulties amid industry oversupply and price declines. It filed for bankruptcy protection between 2014–2015 but remains recognized for its technological contributions to large-format casting mono wafers (“210mm Casting Mono”) that have won industry awards.
