Modesto Irrigation District

The Modesto Irrigation District (MID), established in 1887, is an independent special-purpose district headquartered in Modesto, California. Serving Stanislaus County within California’s Central Valley, MID provides three core services: electrical power distribution to over 120,000 customers; irrigation water delivery supporting approximately 3,100 agricultural users; and treated surface drinking water for the city of Modesto. As a publicly owned utility governed by a locally elected Board of Directors, MID operates on a not-for-profit basis with community ownership.
MID manages several major reservoirs—including Don Pedro Reservoir—and multiple hydroelectric generation stations. While it does not install solar panels itself for end-users, MID plays an active role in integrating renewable energy into its portfolio by purchasing output from local projects such as the McHenry Solar Farm—a 25 MW photovoltaic facility interconnected with MID’s grid. This commitment supports regional sustainability goals while ensuring reliable service at competitive rates.
With more than four centuries of combined staff experience and over 400 employees, MID remains central to both urban infrastructure needs and agricultural productivity throughout its service area.
