Founded in 1984 by Jim Petersen, Petersen-Dean grew to become one of the largest independently owned roofing and solar companies in the United States. The company specialized primarily in new residential construction but also served commercial clients across nine states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas. At its peak prior to COVID-19 disruptions and bankruptcy proceedings in June 2020 under Chapter 11 protection, it employed nearly 3,000 people with annual sales between $300 million to $400 million. Petersen-Dean was recognized as a top-ten U.S. solar installer—eighth-largest residential installer in 2017—and expanded its footprint through acquisitions such as Hawaii’s Haleakala Solar in 2018. The company provided integrated roofing with solar installations for new homes—ahead of regulatory mandates like California’s Title 24 requiring solar on new builds. Despite strong partnerships with industry leaders like Sunnova and Enphase Energy for microinverters and battery storage solutions, financial challenges exacerbated by the pandemic led to bankruptcy. In early 2021 SPI Energy Co., via subsidiary SolarJuice American Inc., acquired many consumer contracts but not all assets; thus Petersen-Dean ceased operations entirely by that time.
