Solar Barn Raising

Solar Barn Raising is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Durango, Colorado, serving the Four Corners region—including La Plata, Montezuma, Archuleta Counties in Colorado and Northern New Mexico. Founded by electrical engineer John Lyle in 2013 after an initial community presentation on solar design and installation methods, Solar Barn Raising was inspired by traditional barn raising events: homeowners collaborate as volunteers to install solar photovoltaic systems at each other’s homes.
The organization’s mission centers on making solar power accessible, affordable, educational—and fostering community engagement around renewable energy. By leveraging volunteer labor through a cooperative model—where participants help install several systems before receiving assistance with their own—Solar Barn Raising dramatically reduces installation costs compared to commercial contractors while providing hands-on learning opportunities.
Services include professional system design using high-quality components; technical guidance throughout permitting and procurement; site assessment; organizing group installation events; educational outreach; and ongoing support. Since inception they have installed over 160 residential/commercial systems across their service area. Their approach empowers homeowners with practical skills while building local expertise in sustainable energy solutions.
